All About Point Monitor

Brief Company History

Point Monitor Corporation was started in 1999 by Mark Higgins to address the clear need in the low voltage systems market for a solutions-focused company with integrity and professionalism…that could deliver results.

Starting with humble beginnings in Aloha, Oregon as a home-based fire alarm business with no customers, the company then moved to Beaverton, stepping four times into ever larger offices, adding staff, and weathering well the recession of 2008-2009. And then as growth accelerated, the growing team landed in 2013 in our present Lake Oswego headquarters, further broadening systems and service offerings, and gaining much influence and respect in the Oregon and SW Washington region.

In the 22 years following our humble launch, the Point Monitor Corporation has grown to 100+ employees in 3 locations, blessed with success and enjoying low employee turnover, while steadily adding plenty of new services and solutions along the way. Employee-owned and merit-based, the Point Monitor family of companies is admired as the market leader now in the Pacific Northwest for fire, security, communications, and control systems, while also providing IT and VOIP phone services for the past five years. The company continues to show steady growth every year of both our dedicated team as well as our satisfied customer base.

In recent times, Point Monitor pressed through the virus crisis with no governmental assistance, benefiting from momentum, efficiency, a loyal customer base, and continued focus and determination by this absolutely amazing team of professionals. Point Monitor is presently rock solid and on the move, ready for new challenges in 2021…and beyond!

Business Philosophy

Annually we as employee stockholders take the time to review again what we stand for and what we strive for, and to renew ourselves to pursuing these values in everything we do at the company.  Each value is relevant to the way we conduct ourselves individually…but also how we as a team conduct business. A few highlights from a business philosophy perspective…

Business Integrity

Every client of Point Monitor knows that we as a company are about keeping commitments. Point Monitor is committed to delivering the best value possible at a reasonable profit. We do this through competence, by “doing our homework”, through communicating with our clients and our partners, and then via careful execution of a plan. When we make a mistake, we take responsibility as a company and it gets resolved. Point Monitor’s approach is naturally a design-build mentality with the desire to provide real solutions, not just off-the-shelf packages of equipment forced on inexperienced or undiscerning building owners. Business integrity is taking the time to put ourselves in your shoes and perceiving what the client actually needs, and then assessing whether we can provide that solution or not.

Proactivity

Being proactive means planning, asking the right questions, collecting information and monitoring results as time and the project progress. In order to plan well, a company needs to understand the objectives up front, recognize obstacles, know what resources are available, know where the potential pitfalls are, and understand expectations along the way. Our people know this and think that way through every decision and new challenge, day in and day out. At a higher level, a successful organization that uses technology needs to perform in-depth analysis of what is available and how it is best used, what is the wrong application of new products being released, and also – where possible – to assess facts on behalf of the client as a worthy partner, to help avert problems before they occur. As conditions, building codes, acceptable methods and customer needs evolve, our company is increasingly looked upon as the subject matter experts. In this role Point Monitor steps up and proactively analyzes the landscape to watch out for threats, for technologies that might soon become obsolete, and…to the benefit of our customers…to remain a leader in understanding and vision regarding the technological solutions of tomorrow.

Company Profitability

For the complex systems going into today’s buildings, building owners and property managers want to know that the servicing company will be around for many years to come, not only to maintain and protect that investment in systems, but also because of the relative ease of operating a building when you have competent long-term partners in place! It is peace of mind: resulting from choosing the right vendor partners. Point Monitor is conservatively managed in a financial sense for long-term viability, we expect to be around for the long haul, ready to serve our clients well after the installation and warranty period has run its course. Similarly, the best employees will gravitate toward a company that is financially stable and takes good care of its productive workers. Point Monitor knows this. As a company, from the workforce and company culture perspective, Point Monitor takes financial responsibility seriously through cost control and efficiency, which leads to a company that can attract and retain the best team possible. Point Monitor is very successful because of its people, because of our tendency to adopt ideas that work, while shedding business methods that are ineffective. That results in a sense of pride and productive and fulfilling careers for its people, and a low-turnover highly trained workforce ready to serve the customer at a peak level. Having the resources to re-invest and renew is a value that the company has taken seriously since 1999. Choose to team with a partner that has staying power.

Project Profitability

Each project is carefully estimated as originally conceptualized and always starts with a great chance of being a good project for all parties involved. Our departments target modestly and consistently performing projects in the financial sense. We don’t believe in rash discounting to manipulate owners, nor do we approve of gouging any customer at any time. We conduct business with integrity. Once a project is underway, on commitments we have made as a company, follow-through is king and proper execution of the agreed-upon work is always the goal, regardless of “the numbers” as the project progresses. If an install experiences unanticipated speedbumps and costs as they may, Point Monitor is always prepared to “press on” to completion…and we do. Every team member knows that cutting corners is not an option on any of our projects at any time. We get the job done right, and we retain our commitment to quality.

Leadership

We are blessed with an amazing band of great leaders, and Point Monitor is known to be a great place to learn and grow as well, and to be challenged. Point Monitor naturally attracts accomplished leaders, but also future leaders as well, because of the nature of our corporate values and our reputation and prestige in the industry. As a company we are extremely careful to place those stars with leadership skills into correct roles, assessing each project and / or customer relationship and playing to the strengths of those on our leadership team. Every single employee is a future leader of some kind within our company. No one stands still, because the company is always improving and advancing and people should as well. Our organization purposes to invest in training and careful supervision of all of our crews, so that they can grow as individuals and each in his or her career. Consequently we as a company grow in the aggregate, increasingly and flawlessly carrying out customer commitments to an ever higher level of excellence and magnitude. Our leadership value has grown our influence to the point that we can handle any size project anywhere

Teamwork

Our workers help each other to succeed. Knowledge is shared willingly at Point Monitor because of the company culture and structure, proven by a clear and undying pursuit as a team toward customer satisfaction and successfully bringing systems online before the deadline. This results in success for the building owner and our partnering contractors. Point Monitor is free of internal company politics and suspicion, as all team members know the objectives, and how accomplishing those together for the client leads to better opportunities for all involved here within our family of companies. Point Monitor builds and grows the team as we generally promote from within. Because of this and the fact that we seek to remain on the growth track, productive and team-minded employees don’t fear that success of another could jeopardize himself or herself. This is why trust, company growth and the pursuit of excellence by all are such important values and have served us so well for 22 years as our amazing team flourishes.

Customer Satisfaction

“Beginning with the end in mind” as a familiar saying is foundational to everything Point Monitor does, including how we manage customer relationships and client expectations. Communication is key in achieving success with clients, and it starts before we set foot on site. Beginning a diagnosis before we have all the facts – or setting unrealistic expectations before we can see the path to success – is something our company knows how to avoid. As Stephen Covey would often say, we believe in “seeking first to understand” before trying to impress with our knowledge. We prefer to plan early and then overdeliver rather than overpromise. We tell you the truth, including the bad news if there is any, defaulting more to long-term planning and candor instead of allowing a building owner to continue to “invest” in a system that will soon need replacement. We operate on principle and deal in facts, and we are careful to accurately communicate what is being offered, sometimes with options, and plausible timelines for completion. And then we make it our highest goal to exceed these customer expectations.

Excellence

There is a true “pursuit of excellence” in everything that our team engages in here. This remains true for how we serve customers, as well as administering internal tasks required to keep the company running. We are a culture of excellence. This seasons our view of quality control, of interactions with others and in person-to-person respect, written and verbal communications, and coordination with the other building trades. Excellence in all things of course also means safety – on and off the jobsite. It also applies to excellent project documentation, accuracy in accounting and cost control, and frankly everything else we touch. It is a core value for all members of this team to strive for excellence, and if done correctly will render a successful installation or service for you as valued client, and for your facility and supporting staff as well.

Risk Control

The Point Monitor team is self-aware as an organization and as individuals, continually examining how and why we work the way we do. Our people do not cut corners, and we are all about knowing and completing the details. Operating according to a plan and managing risk is a key facet of the thought process at our companies. For each aspect of our business there are reasons why the processes that are in place have been adopted, and risk management is a consideration. In many cases methods are designed to control risk to the project (as well as bring success), in turn mitigating risk that could befall our client, and also protecting our team members and partners at the same time. Conscientiously managing risk internally translates to lowered risk for all.

Systematization

Organizations require order. There is a meticulously planned approach to the launch of every Point Monitor project, being a result of broad discussions regarding how commitments are made to customers in the first place, followed by how the work is performed and then signed off, being systematically shepherded through the warranty period and beyond. There is a logic to our procedures and they are followed. Also, customers want to be able to know what can be expected, and our clients have benefited greatly from our predictability of service and consistency of value delivered, partly because things don’t fall through the cracks. And yet Point Monitor is not a rigid bureaucracy unable to improvise and adapt for unique customer needs. Our team can and will think outside the box and step in with alternative solutions. This must be why our companies are awarded so much repeat business, including phased projects, difficult or fast-track applications and design-build teams that work so well together. The familiarity with our team, and the reliability and knowing what to expect provides a consistency that helps other parties and “the broader team” succeed. Finally regarding systematization, a workplace of order provides a sane and low stress environment beneficial to all our workers.

Efficiency

Efficiency is an every-day objective and a prized Point Monitor value. (Conversely, we strive to be effective in our dealings with customers and partners, being willing to invest the time.) Regarding efficiency of task, Point Monitor is very successful due to training, and maintaining effective communications, proactively planning and implementing quality control measures. This practice pays dividends not just to ourselves, but also means a reduced burden on our clients and partners, because the ability to cleanly “get in and get out” eliminates tracking subcontractors and project details, unfairly having to manage the affairs of your subcontractors. We take work seriously…we take notes…and we take the responsibility on ourselves and see it through. We have the plan and the supplies we will need, which allows others to follow and confidently complete their portion of the work behind us. Our punchlists are short, and return trips are infrequent. These company twin values of efficiency and effectiveness keep costs down, enable excellent customer pricing, translating to high value to the customer.

Creativity

Having a can-do attitude requires the ability to survey conditions and circumvent obstacles to success. Point Monitor doesn’t like to fail…and we don’t! Our company naturally has a design-build attitude, more of a “solutions mindset”, and because of that our team is known for its “let’s find a way” attitude. It takes creativity and cooperation at times, but we won’t sacrifice quality to get past a challenge. We sit down and discuss problems, explore how things can be done differently where necessary, and gain consensus. Our people are collaborative, positive, and forward thinking. Creativity includes harnessing new technology. Point Monitor is ready to invest in new ideas, new tools, new methods, and adapted approaches to help a job along and hopefully to help all parties succeed. And we often do. Of course we are pleased when we can succeed alongside our customer, but even better if everyone around us gains a path to success as well, even other trades with whom the low voltage company typically has no involvement. We help where we can, including thinking outside the box where appropriate, and thinking creatively.

It’s All About People

As the saying goes, “people are policy”. A lot can be gleaned about a company by observing how they attract and retain workers. Point Monitor is no exception, and is proud to have such a fine team of professional, effective and caring individuals on the team.

A few highlights regarding the corporate values we have and how it relates to people…

Personal Integrity

A company’s corporate culture cannot rise above the sum of the individuals within it and the character of each. We endeavor to hire and retain individuals of the highest honesty, integrity and work ethic; individuals who desire to be contributing members of a high-functioning team, with good judgment, able to communicate, with a desire to learn and grow, and possessing courage and passion for what they do.

This is why trust, company growth and the pursuit of excellence by all are such important values and have served us so well for 22 years as our amazing team flourishes.

Employee Completeness

Point Monitor enjoys very high productivity from all staff because of the types of individuals that join us. Our workers are stable personally, are winners and therefore can be very productive. But Point Monitor is more about building a team and caring for those people than making a buck. We get to know each employee. We are in it for the long haul, and therefore believe in employee completeness, in compassion and in long-term thinking regarding our workers. We care about each other…and we care for each other. Our management doesn’t put projects or profits ahead of people, especially when it comes to safety. People have lives and we know there are good families and friends behind every successful worker. As a company we endeavor to remain adequately staffed such that those who want the overtime may be able to get it. But we avoid allowing the company to become overcommitted resulting in burning out the team members. We believe we can serve the customer and meet our commitments without taking advantage of our most valuable resource – our employees.

Sustainability

We believe that healthy growth of the company is important, and are thankful for seemingly endless demand to take on more every year. We are willing. But preserving sustainability and avoiding uncontrolled growth is critical. Management of the Point Monitor family of companies is keenly aware that cavalier overcommitting to customers is nothing more than the pathway to disappointment for all…for the field worker…for our professional office staff… and especially for the client. We avoid the temptation to accelerate beyond a healthy pace of expansion.

Excellence

There is a true “pursuit of excellence” in everything that our team engages in here. This remains true for how we serve customers, as well as administering internal tasks required to keep the company running. We are a culture of excellence. Professionalism

There is a correct way to communicate with others, and a professional manner in which to carry oneself. It is a high value for all Point Monitor team members to be professional, courteous and above reproach. This includes being on time, preparing adequately for meetings, following through with others when we have the ball, and proper respect for every individual and for their property. We value every individual no matter how small, and we always treat everyone with dignity and respect. We hire the best…and we hire for results. We pursue candidates only based on character, abilities, a genuine willingness to learn, and the desire to become a reliable team member, rather than focusing on shifting current events or making hiring decisions based on skin color. Our company is proud to have a culture that will not tolerate the harassment or bullying of anyone, nor the taking advantage of people, nor of racism.
